We built DischargED.ai because people deserve better than falling through the cracks after they leave the hospital. Technology built for good can close that gap — and it is our responsibility to use it that way.

A Letter to Our Users

A Letter to Our Users

Every year, millions of people leave emergency rooms, surgical centers, and hospital floors carrying discharge instructions, a follow-up appointment date, and an unspoken hope that they will be okay. For many, the 72 hours that follow represent the most vulnerable window of their recovery — a time when a fever quietly rising, a heart rate climbing in the night, or a week of lost sleep can be early signals of something that needs attention. Signals that, without someone or something watching, go unseen.

DischargED.ai was created to be that watchful presence. Not to replace the doctors, nurses, and care teams who dedicate their lives to patients — but to give those professionals an earlier, clearer, and more complete picture of how their patients are doing the moment they walk out the door. We use machine learning and Apple Watch technology to passively monitor the signals your body sends, recognize patterns that may indicate concern, and connect you to the people who can help — before a problem becomes a crisis.

That mission depends entirely on your trust. And trust, in our view, must be earned through radical transparency, ironclad commitments, and an unwavering refusal to treat your health data as anything other than what it is: deeply personal, profoundly sensitive, and entirely yours.

This statement is our promise to you. It is not fine print. It is not a terms-of-service document designed to protect us. It is a plain-language, honest account of how we think about the data you share with us, what we do with it, what we will never do with it, and the ethical framework that governs every decision we make.

  1. AI Built for Good — Nothing Less

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are among the most consequential technologies ever developed. They can predict, personalize, automate, and optimize at a scale no human workforce could replicate. That power is precisely why the values of the people and organizations deploying it matter so much.

We want to be unambiguous about why we built DischargED.ai and what we believe AI should be used for in healthcare:

  • To enhance patient safety during the most vulnerable period of post-acute recovery.

  • To connect people to clinical help faster, at the moment it matters most.

  • To give care teams earlier visibility into deterioration so they can intervene before a readmission becomes necessary.

  • To reduce the anxiety of recovering alone by providing quiet, continuous, non-intrusive monitoring.

  • To improve clinical outcomes through data-informed insight — not data-driven automation that replaces human judgment.

What we did not build DischargED.ai to do is equally important. We did not build it to reduce headcount in clinical settings. We did not build it to generate advertising revenue. We did not build it to sell your health data to insurers, pharmaceutical companies, researchers, or anyone else. We did not build it to replace the clinician-patient relationship — we built it to strengthen it.

AI in healthcare should always serve the patient first. Every algorithm we write, every signal we monitor, every alert we generate exists for one reason: to help you get better and stay safe. The moment we deviate from that principle, we have failed at the purpose of this platform.

This is not a metaphor. It is a design principle that is baked into every layer of the DischargED.ai platform. Your health data — your heart rate, your sleep patterns, your oxygen levels, your temperature — is generated by your body and collected by your device. We are privileged to be given access to it for the purpose of keeping you safe. That privilege comes with obligations.

When you are actively monitored — typically following a hospital or emergency center discharge — your health signals are collected from your Apple Watch via Apple HealthKit and transmitted securely to our platform. This data is associated with your patient profile and visible to your designated clinical care team. It is used for one purpose: to monitor your recovery and generate alerts when your physiological signals suggest you may need attention.

Your personally identifiable health data is retained in its fully identified form — linked to your name and profile — for 30 days from the date of collection. During this window, your care team can access your data to support your clinical management. After 30 days, your data enters the de-identification process described below.

What ‘30-day retention’ means in practice:

If your Apple Watch records a resting heart rate on Day 1, that reading is linked to your name and profile for exactly 30 days. On Day 31, the link between that reading and your identity is permanently severed. The reading itself may be retained in anonymized form for platform improvement purposes, but it can never be traced back to you.

De-identification after 30 days

De-identification after 30 days

After 30 days, your health signal data is de-identified. Your name, address, contact information, and any other direct identifiers are removed from the data record. What remains, if anything, is a set of physiological measurements associated only with broad demographic attributes: your age range, biological sex, and general body metrics (height and weight range). These demographic anchors exist solely to improve the clinical relevance of our population-level signal analysis — for example, understanding how recovery patterns differ across age groups or body compositions.

This de-identified data cannot be used to identify you. It cannot be reverse-engineered to reveal who you are. It is not your health record — it is an anonymous data point in a clinical dataset.

DischargED.ai is designed from the ground up to meet and, in many areas, exceed the requirements of the two most rigorous health data protection frameworks in the world: the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the United States, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union.

HIPAA alignment

HIPAA alignment

As a platform that handles Protected Health Information (PHI), DischargED.ai operates as a HIPAA-covered entity and business associate. Our commitments under HIPAA include:

  • Minimum necessary access: Clinical staff access only the patient data required for direct care management. No one sees your data who does not have a clinical reason to do so.

  • Technical safeguards: All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3 or higher) and at rest (AES-256). Access is controlled by role-based permissions and multi-factor authentication.

  • Audit trails: Every access to your health record is logged. We can tell you who accessed your data, when, and for what purpose.

  • Breach notification: In the unlikely event of a data breach, we will notify affected users within the timeframes required by law — and we will tell you exactly what happened.

GDPR alignment

For users in the European Union and for all users as a matter of principle, we apply GDPR’s core data protection principles across our entire platform:

  • Lawfulness and transparency: We collect only the data we have told you about, for the purposes we have described, with your informed consent.

  • Purpose limitation: Your data is used only for the purposes for which you provided it. Health monitoring data is not repurposed for marketing, profiling, or commercial analytics.

  • Data minimization: We collect the minimum data necessary to deliver safe, effective monitoring. We do not collect data speculatively.

  • Storage limitation: Data is retained only as long as necessary, as described in Section 3. We do not hold your data indefinitely.

  • Right to erasure: You have the right to request deletion of your data. We will honor that request within the timeframes required by law.

  • Right to data portability: You have the right to receive your data in a portable, machine-readable format.

HIPAA and GDPR set the floor. We treat them as the minimum — not the ceiling. Our 30-day de-identification window, our 120-day deletion policy, and our absolute prohibition on data sales go beyond what either framework requires. 1. AI Augments - Never Replaces Human Judgment

  1. AI Augments - Never Replaces Human Judgment

One of the most important questions in the responsible deployment of AI in healthcare is where the boundary lies between machine intelligence and human decision-making. We have thought carefully about this boundary and have made an explicit design choice about where DischargED.ai sits.

Our platform detects physiological signal patterns. It surfaces clinical alerts. It delivers information to care teams. It does not diagnose. It does not prescribe. It does not make clinical decisions. Every alert our system generates is reviewed and acted upon by a licensed clinician. The AI is the scout — the clinician is the decision-maker.

This is not a technical limitation. It is an ethical boundary we have deliberately chosen to honor. We believe that any AI system that makes unsupervised clinical decisions about patient care — without meaningful human oversight — is not yet ready to be trusted with that responsibility. Until the evidence base, regulatory frameworks, and clinical validation standards for autonomous AI clinical decision-making have matured, DischargED.ai will remain a tool in the hands of clinicians, not a substitute for them.

  1. The Workforce We Support

  1. The Workforce We Support

There is a concern, entirely legitimate, that AI tools in healthcare will be used to justify reducing clinical staff, cutting nursing positions, or replacing the human connection that is fundamental to good care. We want to address this directly.

DischargED.ai is not a workforce reduction tool. It is a force multiplier for the clinicians, nurses, and care coordinators who are already stretched impossibly thin. The platform’s purpose is to give those professionals earlier warning of patient deterioration so they can intervene more effectively — not to replace the phone call a nurse makes, the exam a physician conducts, or the reassurance a care coordinator provides.

We will not market DischargED.ai as a tool for reducing clinical headcount. We will not produce ROI models that frame reduced staffing as a benefit of our platform. Any healthcare organization that attempts to use DischargED.ai to justify unsafe staffing reductions is misusing our technology, and we reserve the right to terminate relationships with organizations that do so.

You agree not to use the Services to:

  • Violate any applicable local, state, national, or international law or regulation.

  • Impersonate any person or entity, or falsely represent your credentials, role, or affiliation.

  • Access or attempt to access accounts, data, or systems not authorized for your role.

  • Interfere with, disrupt, or circumvent the security, availability, or integrity of the platform.

  • Transmit any malicious code, viruses, or other harmful components.

  • Use the Services for commercial solicitation or advertising not authorized by

    DischargED.ai.

  • Share access credentials with unauthorized individuals.

  • Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or extract source code from any component of the Services.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these acceptable use standards.

  1. Transparency as an Ongoing Commitment

  1. Transparency as an Ongoing Commitment

We recognize that a statement of intent, however sincerely written, is not the same as accountability. Words are easy. The test of an ethical AI company is what it does when a commitment becomes commercially inconvenient, when selling data would be profitable, when reducing disclosure would be simpler, when cutting corners would go unnoticed.

We commit to the following ongoing transparency practices:

  • Annual public reporting on data handling practices, de-identification procedures, and any changes to our privacy architecture.

  • Prompt public disclosure of any data breach or security incident, with a plain-language explanation of what happened and what we are doing about it.

  • Notification to users of any material changes to this statement before those changes take effect — not after.

  • An accessible, plain-language privacy summary available at all times — not buried in legal boilerplate.

  • A dedicated channel for users to ask questions about their data, exercise their rights, or raise concerns about our practices.

We also invite scrutiny. If you believe we are not living up to the commitments in this statement, we want to hear from you. External accountability is not a threat to us — it is part of how we earn and keep your trust.

DischargED.ai provides a monitoring and

communication support platform only. The Services do not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing, or any other licensed healthcare profession. Specifically:

  • DischargED.ai does not diagnose medical conditions.

  • Alerts, trend indicators, and risk scores generated by the platform are

informational outputs intended to prompt clinical review, not clinical diagnoses.

  • All clinical decisions, treatment plans, and patient care actions are the exclusive

    responsibility of the licensed healthcare

professionals involved in a patient's care.

  • DischargED.ai does not guarantee that the Services will detect all instances of patient

deterioration, or that alerts will be received or acted upon by care team members in a timely manner.

USERS SHOULD NOT RELY ON DISCHARGED.AI AS THEIR SOLE MEANS OF HEALTH MONITORING OR EMERGENCY RESPONSE.

A Final Word

A Final Word

Every design decision, every data policy, and every line of code in DischargED.ai reflects a belief: that technology can be built with integrity, that health data can be handled with dignity, and that artificial intelligence can be deployed in a way that genuinely improves human lives without compromising the privacy, autonomy, or trust of the people it serves.

We are a small company with an ambitious purpose. We do not have the resources of the large technology platforms, the market power of the major health systems, or the institutional credibility that comes with decades of operation. What we have is a clear sense of what we are trying to do, a deep respect for the people who trust us with their health data, and an absolute commitment to the principles in this statement.

We will make mistakes. We will encounter situations we did not anticipate. When that happens, we will be honest about it, fix it as fast as we can, and tell you what went wrong. We will not hide behind legal language or corporate non-answers. We will talk to you like the human beings you are.
